Renowned US Four-Star General Stanley A. McChrystal Joins LRI Board of Governors

The Directors of the Long Run Institute are honoured to welcome General Stanley A. McChrystal (ret.), former Director of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and co-founder of The McChrystal Group, to the Board of Governors.

Following his significant achievements in the military arena, perhaps most notably as commander of the U.S. and International Forces in Afghanistan and leader of the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC), General McChrystal founded The McChrystal Group “to deliver innovative leadership solutions to businesses globally in order to help them transform and succeed in challenging, dynamic environments.” Widely lauded as a “warrior-scholar,” General McChrystal is the author of several books, including Team of Teams: New Rules of Engagement for a Complex World; Leaders: Myth and Reality; and most recently Risk: A User’s Guide. A four-star general with an MA in national security and strategic studies from the Naval War College, General McChrystal is passionate about the value of history for contemporary insight. He is a senior fellow at Yale University’s Jackson Institute for Global Affairs.

General McChrystal commented “as business and risk environments become more complex and ambiguous, I am pleased to support the LRI in its initiatives designed to assist decision makers facing these challenges. The institute’s commitment to using history to develop a better understanding of the deep context shaping these environments and equipping long-run perspectives are important elements in improving decision making.”

LRI Chair Dr. Laurence B. Mussio observed “General McChrystal is one of the world’s outstanding leaders. As a ‘warrior-scholar’ he has had an extraordinary impact on how people think about leadership and service and stands as both model and example of servant leader. An important source of that leadership has been a deep and sophisticated understanding of the importance of history that runs through his career and writings like a golden thread. On behalf of the directors of the Long Run Institute, I am delighted to welcome him to the Board of Governors and look forward to working with him in the months ahead.”
